When done by a qualified medical professional, abortion surgery is safe and predictable with minimal discomfort. An accredited abortion clinic should be properly equipped and staffed so as to provide quality care to women before, during and after the procedure.

1

Mandatory Counselling

Any women requesting an abortion will need to go through a consultation / counseling by a certified abortion counselor at a MOH-accredited abortion clinic. Our doctor and senior nurses are accredited abortion counselors.

The consultation will likely require about 10 minutes of your time. During the session, the circumstances of request for abortion, procedure options and contraception will be discussed. This will be conducted in your full privacy.

You may attend the consultation alone, or with your partner or family members of your choice.

2

Cooling-off Period

After the mandatory counselling there is a mandatory cooling period of at least 48 hours before you can terminate the pregnancy.

3

Before The Procedure

You will need to fast for 6 hours – no food and drinks except clear fluids /sips of water for medications. We will provide you with full instructions prior to the procedure. You may come alone or be accompanied by someone on day of procedure

4

During The Procedure

The procedure is conducted in our procedure room at level 2 of our clinic, with complete privacy. There are private recovery rooms after procedure for you to rest before you return home.

The procedure is completely painless as it is performed under sedation. You will be asleep for about 5 minutes for the procedure to be completed. You will then need to rest in the clinic for about 1-2 hours before going home.

5

After The Procedure

You will be discharged from clinic after 1-2 hours. The procedure is usually fast and convenient and the effects are similar to having a period with some period cramps. It is important to visit your doctor again for a review 2 weeks after the abortion to ensure that you have recovered well. Doctor will also discuss contraception options with you.

What are the Types of Abortion?

The procedure is called vacuum aspiration, where a small tube is placed into the womb under sedation (painless procedure) to empty the contents inside the womb.

The procedure is  ultrasound-guided and limited to vacuum only without scraping. Ultrasound enhances the completeness and safety of the procedure.

Admission to the hospital will be needed to perform a medically – induced abortion. The process requires more time and may take up to 1-2 days.   Medicines are used to induce a “mini delivery” of the fetus. A procedure may also be required to clean the womb of the contents / retained product of conception following expulsion of the fetus.

Abortion is strictly prohibited beyond 24 weeks unless the pregnancy jeopardizes the life of the pregnant woman.
